Did a Grok bot turn $50 into $5,273 on Polymarket in 48 hours?

What was claimed?

“i gave Elon's Grok Bot $50 and told it "pay for yourself or you die" 48 hours later it's holding $5,273 and it's still alive autonomous trading agent on polymarket”

— @Argona0x on X, 2026-08-24 17:53 UTC. The post carried a video. It trended on X (about 1,262,908 views and 4,873 likes as fetched 2026-10-01) and drew a Community Note on 2026-08-25.

In numbers: a start of $50, an end of $5,273, 48 hours, on Polymarket, by a “Grok Bot”. The same post says the bot “dipped to $11” on day one, then “moved to weather markets”. Five hours later, at 23:12 UTC, the poster added that the balance was “right now: $5,912 and climbing” and announced a token whose fees would feed the bot.

Through September the claim travelled as short videos on Instagram and Facebook, mostly as “someone gave a Grok agent $50 … $5,000 in 48 hours”. Several of those reposts end with a “comment and I’ll send you the setup” pitch. We checked the claim, not the reposts.

What did we check, and how?

A claim about Polymarket is checkable, because every account’s trades there are public. Two accounts were in reach. The Community Note names polymarket.com/@donothackmeee as the account linked from the post; we could not open the video ourselves, so we take that identification from the Note and say so. We also checked the account that carries the poster’s own handle, polymarket.com/@argona0x. Both are public pages.

For each account we pulled its complete activity — every trade, deposit, withdrawal, payout and rebate — from Polymarket’s data API, its daily cumulative profit-and-loss from Polymarket’s PnL API, and the current value of its open positions. The claimed window is the 48 hours before the post: we read it generously as the three UTC days 2026-08-22 through 2026-08-24. Fetched 2026-09-30 23:57:20 UTC and 2026-10-01 00:00:27 UTC.

Activity in the window A trade “every 10 minutes” 938 trades worth $11,595.32 across 2026-08-22 → 24 (372 / 244 / 322 per day). Heavy, automated-looking activity — the record shows the account, not what placed the orders.
Since the post “still alive”; balance “$5,912” five hours after the post Cumulative profit-and-loss $9,578.40 on 2026-08-24, $14,942.69 on 2026-08-30 and $25,183.32 on 2026-09-30; open positions worth $6,480.97 at fetch time. Cash balance is not public.

One more thing the record holds. Its largest two-day move is 2026-08-19 → 2026-08-21: cumulative profit-and-loss from −$747.41 to $10,657.00, a gain of $11,404.41, beginning the day after the $5,000 went in. Those are different dates and different amounts from the claim. We print them because a reader will ask.

Note on volume: the profile page displays “Total Volume 1M”. Summing the usdcSize of every TRADE row gives $204,378.08. Polymarket’s displayed figure follows its own definition; we print the sum anyone can recompute from the rows.

What does this prove, and what does it not?

How did the claim change as it spread?

Recompute it yourself

  1. Resolve a profile to its proxy wallet: open polymarket.com/@<name>; the 0x address repeated in the page source is the proxyWallet (also present on every row the activity endpoint returns).
  2. GET https://data-api.polymarket.com/activity?user=<address>&limit=500&offset=<n>&start=1&excludeDepositsWithdrawals=false&sortBy=TIMESTAMP&sortDirection=ASC — page by offset; when the API refuses a high offset, restart with start=<last timestamp seen> and drop duplicate rows.
  3. GET https://user-pnl-api.polymarket.com/user-pnl?user_address=<address>&interval=all&fidelity=1d — Polymarket's own cumulative profit-and-loss per day.
  4. GET https://data-api.polymarket.com/value?user=<address> — current value of open positions (not cash).
  5. Window: rows with 2026-08-22T00:00Z <= timestamp < 2026-08-25T00:00Z (the 48 hours before the 2026-08-24 post, read generously as three UTC days). Volume = sum of usdcSize over TRADE rows.
